As I write this I am on the road to Vancouver, British Columbia and the 99th Grey Cup. Who would have thought when we formulated the plan to attend that the 2010, 4 and 14 Winnipeg Blue Bombers would have even had a shot at getting to the big show, let alone finishing the top of the Eastern Division. It certainly is a strange league but I guess that is the beauty of there being only 8 teams. That means that every game is important! How else could the Bombers have retained that top spot despite having a mediocre second half to the season and on the flip side, how could the BC Lions have pulled off a first place finish in the west despite going on a 5 game losing streak. For the Bombers the strong start gave them the buffer room to stumble a little and for BC pouring it on for the last half and making every game count worked in their favor.
Now I am hoping that after 21 years the Bombers will be able to capture the crown jewel of the Canadian Football League. They have had their opportunities in the past. They lost to Saskatchewan back in 2007 in a game they could have won had not their quarterback suffered a devastating injury in the Eastern Final. They should have beat Calgary back in 2001 as they finished the season with a strong 14 and 4 record but that was not meant to be either.
This year they come in as the underdogs. Quite often that can be an advantage. With nothing to lose and a quarterback with a strong work ethic and never say die attitude, I am confident that the 2011 Winnipeg Blue Bombers just may be able to pull out a surprise victory.
But it wont be pretty. It never is with those guys. Thats why I love em and why I have spent a good part of 40 years pulling my hair out.
See you in Vancouver!
